Bust of George Gough Booth

1923

Mario Korbel modelled this bust of George Gough Booth at Cranbrook in the summer of 1923. Sitting for his portrait at the age of fifty-nine, George Booth’s face shows the marks of his age, while his solemn expression conveys the weight of his responsibilities, as head of Booth Newspapers and co-founder of the Detroit Society of Arts and Crafts. George Booth was an enthusiastic patron of Korbel, with whom he corresponded frequently about his ongoing projects for Cranbrook House and its grounds.

A photograph of the bust was published in Town and Country magazine in 1925, much to George Booth’s annoyance, who would have preferred to avoid the spotlight. Korbel apologized, explaining that he thought Booth had given permission for its publication, adding “I myself think it looks very distinguish [sic].”
