Three-Handled Jar

Ceramicist (American, 1867-1961)
Pottery (American, founded 1903)
Circa 1907-1914

Among the largest of the Pewabic pieces in the Booth family collection, this imposing, three-handled vase was purchased for display in Cranbrook House before 1914.

Pewabic Pottery, founded by the ceramicist Mary Chase Perry Stratton in 1903, is the longest-running continuously operating art pottery in the United States. It was supported from its early years by George Booth, in his capacity as a founder of the Detroit Society of Arts and Crafts, frequent patron, and personal friend of Stratton. The subtly varied, rippling colors of this earth-toned vase were produced through careful layering of glazes, which ran and blended in the firing process. Stratton was famous for her rigorous and time-consuming experimentation with glazes, through which she was able to produce unique art objects such as this vase.
