Kingswood School Cranbrook Scandinavia Lounge Rug

Designer (American born Finland, 1879 - 1968)
Workshop (American, 1928-1942)
1931

This rug was designed for use in the Kingswood School Cranbrook’s "conversation corner", similar to one in Saarinen House, with complementary rugs for the bench seating. The chevron patterns repeat Eliel Saarinen’s stained glass window designs throughout Kingswood school. It is the only known rug with this type of chevron design woven at Studio Loja Saarinen.

In 1954, what had become known as the Academic or Faculty Lounge was converted into office space (now the Admissions Office). The bench seats were removed and relocated to the hall (mezzanine area) above the auditorium lobby. In 1980, the rug was removed to storage.
