Kingswood School Cranbrook Lower Level Pedestal Lamp
While there are many lovely and custom or semi-custom light fixtures throughout Kingswood School Cranbrook, these polished brass and limestone reflectors is of special note for its design, manufacture, and materials.
Designed by Eliel Saarinen and manufactured by Edward F. Caldwell & Company, it anchors the northwestern corridor of the lower level of Kingswood School Cranbrook. It also represents the continued legacy of Caldwell & Company's work on campus from Cranbrook House (1908, 1918), Christ Church Cranbrook (1929), and Saarinen House (1930).
Edward F. Caldwell & Company (1895-1959)
Edward F. Caldwell & Company of New York City, was one of the premier designers and manufacturers of electric light fixtures and decorative metalwork from the late 19th to the mid-20th centuries. Founded in 1895 by Edward F. Caldwell (1851–1914) and Victor F. von Lossberg (1853–1942), the firm left a legacy of custom designed and finely-made, metal gates, lanterns, chandeliers, ceiling and wall fixtures, floor and table lamps, and other decorative objects that can be found today in many churches, public buildings, offices, clubs, and residences including, Cranbrook House, Saarinen House, and Thornlea House, at Cranbrook Educationsal Community.
